There has been a suicide in Keddie over the weekend.

I have confirmed that there has been a suicide in Keddie this last weekend. Roumors are that a suicide note has been found and the admiting responsibility fo rthe Keddie murders of the Sharp and Wingate family.

IT IS NOT CONFIRMED YET that indeed the person who killed themselves was one of the killers and wrote a suicide note coming clean.

I will keep you all closely updated on this new information

That is largely rumour remember.

It was near Keddie. The guy was not from here. There was no mention
of any connection to the Keddie murders. It was last week. The paper
comes out on wed. You can see it on line. Yes I heard it from a horses
mouth. A real horse, not alleged. Sorry I can't say who Laughing

it's is sad a person comes to such a low in his life, that they feel suicide is the only way out....so sad.....meny a person has cone to such a point, myself included at one time,....if onlly they would or could reach out, just a little, some where, some how, a door will open to help.

you know, if this person had of left a note admitting to taking part of the muders, it would have been ok..at least it would have helped in our quest, as to who done it......may not as to why....but bring a little bit of closuer

i sort of have a hard time believing that this person was the murderer. i hope it was for the sake of family and friends but why wait so long? why go back to that place to do it? i heard on the news that the body was outside by a burnt out campfire. didnt mention how they killed themselves. but when i heard about it it creeped me out and for some reason reminded me of this site. so thats why i am back.

As a policy, the Feather River Bulletin does cover suicides. At least that was the case during the eight years I was editor there.

Two reasons it's not coming online:

First, as a policy, the Feather River Bulletin does cover suicides. At least that was the case during the eight years I was editor there.

Second, not every story that appears in the newspaper is available online. Even those that appear online are shorter. They have a link at the bottom of the shortened story that says, "Click here for more information" or something like that. When you click, you are asked to subscribe to the newspaper. An old marketing gimmick that I, regrettably, suggested and implemented there.

Sweetpea - I think you are right. It does not seem to have hit any of the papers yet. The only explanation is notification of the next of kin.

David K. - thanks for your input. The suicide would be public info to some degree and definitely "sensational" enough to sell papers. I think it is a case of notification. Although - and correct me if I'm wrong here - wouldn't the paper just publish the story and say the person had not been identified, pending notification of next of kin? Isn't that what they generally do?

And if that is true - then what's going on?

The information I have learned on this is that the person whom killed thereself was a Drifter and not from the aera. I dont have a name, there was a note left but nothing involving the Keddie Murders. Roumors do spread fast. Lets move foward from here

Come to think of it, the paper here rarely if ever writes
about suicides. Dave, better than I, would know why. Really
it's nobody's business. Thinking back, the several suicides over
the yrs I have been here have not been in the paper. Sometimes
they are mentioned in the Sheriff's Blotter if someone calls
in an attempted suicide. Then of course, sometimes it
is in the obituary but not the reason why they've died.
And to quote Forest Gump: And that is all I have to say
about that..... Very Happy

The newspaper's policy was pretty clear, and I doubt it has changed. The Bulletin simply does not print suicides. Here is the reasoning: A crime has not occurred. It's a privacy issue. There's no news value in it.

There are exceptions. For example, if someone held law enforcement at bay and Highway 70 was shut down for several hours, chances are decent if would qualify as news. It's no longer a private matter of someone taking their own life. It's more a matter of someone involving the public; that's news. A murder-suicide, in most instances, would qualify as news. There are other reasons something would qualify as news. Generally speaking, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

A drifter who killed himself, while sad, is not news.

I'm probably over-simplifying the matter.

Typo on my part or left out word. I do that sometimes. I'm kind of a dork that way. What I meant to say was that the newspaper does not print stories about suicides, except in rare and very extraordinary circumstances. A drifter killing himself does not sound particularly rare and extraordinary to me.

Obits are submitted by two local mortuaries. That means someone who cared enough, like a family member, would have sent the body to one of the two. My guess is that the body was sent to wherever home is and it was handled there. Merely because someone dies does not mean it makes the newspaper. Only about 60 to 70 percent of the local deaths appear in the newspaper.
