I just remember a murder case in Portola in 1982. The victims first name was something like Pelius. He was a young transient found bludgened to death. Chris Roney was convicted and I think one other. I knew chris . He was quite and kinda of simple. If I recall it was called a thrill killing. About a week before he was arrested I picked him up on hiway 70 above Blairsden. I usually dont pick up hitch hikers But it was early morning and I recognized him. I was on my way to Sacramento to pick up my kids for visitation. I would go over gold lake road down 49 to auburn then into sac. I asked Chris where he was going. He said he was going to quincy. I told him where I was going and my route. I told him I would drop him off at the Blairsden turn off telling him he would have a better chance of getting a ride into Quincy. When I pulled over to let him off it was like we had never had that conversation. He asked what I was doing. I had to explain it all over again. Then he said he was really going to Oroville. Again I told him I wasn't going that way. I just about had to physicaly remove him from my car.

Is there a connection? I dont know . But it was another senseless brutal killing in the same area about the same time. maybe we should revisit any senseless crime in the area. Can any one else recall any crimes of that era?

Isn't it funny how you usually don't pick up hitchhikers unless they happen to be thrill killers?

What is interesting is even though it was twenty-four years ago and the ride was about as far as from Quiny to Keddie I remember every word that was said. Strange?

No kidding! They made me sit in the jury box and everything. I was scared to death they were going to pick me. I would have had nightmares for the rest of my life.

Didn't he have a buddy with him? and wasn't one of them the son of the district attorney or something?

Hey Salem - that is pretty freaky. MP picks up the guy at one point in time, and then you get called for the jury pool. Boy, small world.......

Yes - he did. There were two of them. And yes, they said they did it for drugs. That's why they didn't pick me to sit on the jury. My younger brother had just been busted for some pot or something. Got me excused!

I haven't thought about this in years and I never thought about it in conjunction, because, aside from the brutality, the two crimes seemed to be very different.

Chris and buddy were not very old either - only 17 to 19ish if I remember correctly. I don't think they were 21 yet.

Weren't there 2 children murdered in Portola around the same time? A brother and a sister, I believe?

Nevermind, I just found it on the web. It was in Portola in 1989. The Chias 6 and 8, very sad.

I think you are correct about their ages . I remember another incident with chris about the same time. a bunch of us were sitting in the Bank club in Portola. A stranger was at the bar. chris walked into the bar without saying a word and put a couple bucks in front of the stranger then turned and walked out. the stranger didn't know what it was about . Every one just kind of looked at each other and shrugged. Like what the hell was that all about. Through chris's behavior was odd I never linked it to killing someone.

And yes, guitarplayer.....that is kinda freaky. Except it is a very small county, population wise.

The case you are speeking of was the children of a restaranteer from Reno. Their bodies were found by a caltrans worker on highway 70 about three miles east of Blairsden. If I recall there was no conection to Portola. it was just a dumping ground for murders commited in the reno area.

Salem - though I may get told that I don't know shit, ah hell........I'll risk it.

I am guessing that Portola is in Plumas County? Is it?

I did read where out of the 55 Counties in CA, Plumas is ranked #50 as far as population goes.

Correct - Portola is in Plumas County. It is the great rival of the Quincy High Trojans!

Can't remember the name of the Portola team.

Well - they should have Roney's DNA. Maybe they will run a test on it or his buddy's.

I tried to look this up, but couldn't find it.

And Guest - I found the link on the Chia children. When I first read your post, I thought you had mispelled Child - so I didn't catch on that that was the family name.

Never look past the Hi Fi murders, which happened in Ogden, UT in 1974. I eventually lived in that area, and it makes the Kellie murders seem sensible by comparison.

Cabin 28 was rudimentary. Oblique, but look at the similarities: which of these suspects could have done the crime?

OK?
