I heard this podcast first when I was distracted by my job, multitasking. So glad I listened again before giving it any praise.

At first, my main complaint was it sounded like an annoying asshole of a robot. Turns out, next best to robot is this moron.

I initially thought he had the basic facts square enough; I was to give a mediocre thumbs up. Then I listened again and saved you all so much time!

THE ROBOTIC VOICE : Whelan, sounding like a moron robot from 2004
THE SMALL FUCKUPS: I noticed some on the first listen, but thought the overall was OK. BOY-O was I wrong!
I LISTENED AGAIN, CLOSELY and found organized mistakes, and inventions I'd never heard. 'NEW TO DMAC' is kinda odd, cuz it's 99.9% bullshit from morons.
He uses this site to convey any point, uses our work to convey any progression from 'cold' to 'active', yet so many lies! Seems assembled with truth just a couple steps away. Some BS and very new lies?

SUE chose to NC aftr DISCOVERING her hubby was NEWLY fucking her kids
SUE MOVED TO 28 AFTER THE MURDERS, in AUG 1981 (obvious mistake by an asshole)
DON WENT IN AND OT OF 28 MANY TIMES BEFORE VOMITING BECAUSE HE WAS EXHAUSTED AT SEEING HIS DEAD SIS (where the f?)
GARY MOLLATH WANTED TO MAKE KEDDIE BETTER B4 & AFTER THE MURDERS. He's a hero in this lie, when he is a clear drug asshole
THIS ASS STOLE MOST INFO FROM THIS SITE, YET KNOWS ZERO ABOUT ALBINS
Murders reported from LODGE!, not Albins!
DANA was an LSD stealer!Garry Mollath loved KEddue, he wanted the very best for those he criminally insulted!
The murders were not heard exactly at a time by two neighbors, they became "heavy grunting" from unknown neighbors "between 12 and 2"? Fucking A!

So glad he posts for money, as he's a thief and a liar.

https://unresolved.me/about

Yeah, he cares so damned much about--- income from his lie-filled podcast

Can one get through such horrid truth without using humor as a survival reflex?
I've never heard a Keddie podcast where jokes aren't present, but I've also not heard a Keddie podcast where jokes weren't foremost. "Let's mock" kind of silly, useless shit. Particularly in relation to true crime, all the podcasters I've heard use murders as a way to riff off of killers, victims, cops- zero sanctity (much less true empathy found), just another crime to insult for filthy lucre.

Did SERIAL have silly, giggling asshole hosts? I didn't hear it in the episode I tried to endure. (I'm not interested in 99.9% of murders, and SERIAL offers nothing to the Keddie case). I doubt like hell SERIAL would have been treated with any regard were it as the rest of podcasters treat these murders:

Another Keddie Podcast, by ignorant hosts with empathy as nonexistent as their talent.

From the early hours of the backlash, this includes Josh's last public post known:

Josh is a LIAR

Postby Eastern » Tue Sep 17, 2013 8:14 am
That picture speaks volumes and tells an important part of what happened that night. I don't even want to think about why it wasn't shown sooner. Kudos to Deborah, dmac, and numerous others who kept plugging away and dealing with the games that continued to be played. Sue, Dana, Johnny, and Tina at least deserve the dignity of the truth of their murders being told.

Thank you E!!!

I did not get involved in this case to make or be a part of a dvd or to get praise of any kind. I got involved in this case to do everything that I could to help. I thought if Bo Boubede was involved in anyway that it was my responsibility to the victims and to the survivors of the victims.

I have put my butt out there on the line getting involved with so many different sick lying people involved in this case but I don't care!!! I will continue doing it because I know that eventually I will find out the truth. Oh and Dmac you may not agree with me abt publishing some of the information that I have discovered but I have my reasons. Oh and folks there is plenty more that I will be publishing that will make your heads spin.

Now for Josh being a liar, Yes he is!!!! Back when I started investigating this case.....I asked Josh for any and all evidence that he might have and he kept telling me that everything that he had was published. Here is a prime example of a lie he told me. This is in response to me asking him for a copy of "Bo Boubede's" interview.

Hi Deborah,

Unfortunately, no. I never had access to that tape--I'm not sure if it even exists anymore.

I can't thank you enough for your efforts and support. I regret deeply that we had not "met" before, as I surely would have asked you to be involved in part two of the film.

Stay in touch any time!

Josh Lied To Me Because He Was In Possession Of The Tape....The Taped Interview Of "Bo Boubede" With DOJ. Now Josh....Why Did You Lie To Me? I have shared everything with you and even by passed the fact that you totally got information wrong in the first dvd. Information that made people believe that "Lucky", Bo's son was actually Bo boudede. If you would of researched the case and the people involved you of would of found the right information but you didn't! You claim you made the dvd's to bring awareness to the "Keddie Case", you did do that but you put more lame crap in there then actual facts about the case. The murders are not something to be making money off of that is pure disgusting that people do that....So many people have wrote books and articles and YET not ONE person has got the facts obvious facts right!
A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.

Wow, what a wild morning.

Deborah, you are right. Obviously I had access to that tape; you can hear part of it in the second documentary. I honestly can't recall why I said that I did not have access when clearly it's been clear from the film that I did. My only thought is that I meant that I no longer have access to the tape, as I returned it to the sheriff's office. I apologize.

I'm surprised that with the posting of a single photograph, the claws come out and suddenly I'm the pariah. Maybe these are things people have been wanting to say to me for a while. So be it. I repeat: to think that I would intentionally withhold a photo, while posting countless other photos and documents and sending countless materials to Dmac, makes little sense to me. But everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion on this and I'm not going to try to convince anyone of my character.

Deborah, again--you are right and I am sorry for the miscommunication. As for the photo and the claims that have been made as a result, I've said my piece.

I was recently looking through my emails from Josh, and I came across this one. I know some people claim that he didn't steal files and that he was watched the whole time but that is not true. Read this...

jhancock16@comcast.net

to me
Hi Deb,

From what I know, Doug was in and out of the room during those interviews, so I think that's what he means when he says they were right there along with the DOJ. But see...I could be wrong. There was a LOT of material we never got to. It was all very overwhelming and in hindsight, I would have gone about it a different way. My producer and I just started rifling through stuff, gathering what we could, waiting for the PCSO to come in and say STOP. It was all very hectic.

I like Gamberg. I don't see why he would agree to be the "gatherer" of all the case files and nothing else. Though it is odd that his exact words to me were "I don't have ANY original files." That doesn't make any sense!

Keep me posted and let me know if there's anything I can do! :)

Josh

It makes complete sense Josh on "Why" Gamberg did not have any of the original files..........You and Your producer stole them. Dmac even has the original tape of "Bo's" interview and original files that YOU mailed him! So how is that Josh? Don't you just love that! You left a long paper trail that proves your a liar and a felon, Josh!
A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.

Where is this picture you are talking about? I usted to have acces to the pictures, with enough approved posts and all, now I don't? :-??| Well, guess I have a lot (as in A LOT! =-)) ) of reading to do ;-) Thanks for reminding me that there is something important to pay attention to here.

Hi, Chris, and welcome back. Josh deleted a bunch of posts from this thread because they dared tell the truth about how he stole files from PCSO and lied to everyone about it, and has continuously lied about what information he has about the case. We had asked for YEARS for photos from the kitchen, bedroom, anywhere else in the cabin, and he insisted time and again there were none. Then he casually threw this photo up on his fb page, where he tries to milk the case and milk money out of unsuspecting people for his lousy "crockumentaries".

<deleted>

If Josh had been truthful and posted this photo, we wouldn't have wasted YEARS thinking Sue was asleep on the couch. No, she was asleep on the big bed that night, the eyeglasses she constantly wore for near-sightedness on the nightstand. That means the attacks began in the bedroom. Her robe was hanging on the bedroom closet door, her glasses on the nightstand. This single photo proves where the crimes began: in the bedroom. Otherwise, Sue would have put on her glasses, then her robe (found still hanging on the closet door, where she'd placed it before climbinginto bed). With the other photos and evidence from the bedroom, it shows the killers came into the unlocked house and began the attacks in the girls' back bedroom. The room furthest from either entry point- indicating the killers knew the layout.

This thread began as a response of rage to Josh's repeated lies, and ended with me removing all of my copyrighted work from his server, leaving Josh with nothing. Several weeks later, I began designing a new website, and began pruning down the forum so it was easier to understand the case. I was reminded a couple days ago that the anniversary was coming up, so I hurriedly bought a domain and got a bare-bones version of the site together. It debuted on the afternoon of April 11, 2014.

As for images, some were lost due to errors when transferring the forum, and I'm working to restore them. The site has also been rearranged to further prevent lurkers and gorehounds gaining access to more graphic images and/or sensitive case-related info. All members are required to make 15 posts before they have full access to the board. A similar rule should have been in place since Day One, not to penalize newbies but to help separate the wheat from the chaff. The posting rules have stopped 99.9% of spammers, scammers, and trolls.
"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Right after I revived the forum, Metcalf emailed me. The 3-piece article she did last year won top honors for best research or something. California News Publishers Assoc. awards:

https://cnpa.com/cja/2018print/

In-Depth Reporting- 1st Place: Feather River Bulletin
"Keddie Murders Revisited: Parts I, II and III" by Victoria Metcalf
"This was by far and away the most well-researched and well-sourced story in this category. Excited to see more from them."

https://www.plumasnews.com/?s=keddie+revisited

While I stand by the article as the best (and most intense) primer on the case published as news, any story of such depth is bound to go off the rails at times. I'd be happy for most newbies to read this series, as it will answer many Qs.

Hey, keep in mind Sheila isn't in the article. I just realized that. Might be why the article isn't bogged down.

I think updating and correcting a few things will go a long way in understanding the case, and the solve. So maybe I should post updates, based on the actual article? Just a thought, as I'm looking for a quick out. I did not put the forum back online to be involved like I was. I'm done with assholes and criminal morons who choose not to see very simple truths. Perhaps writing reactionary updates to the article is my best way to keep newbies and respected old growth in touch.

One remaining thought: Reality must be a bitch when you're an idiot. Oops, two: Can I still right?

I became interested in true crime a few years ago when I started heavily researching the Maura Murray case (if you like cases as complex as this one, I definitely suggest that one as well). I would love to go back to school for criminal justice or something along those lines, I would love to work on cold cases sometime in the future, but for now until I can afford school I will have to stick with forums and hopefully meeting/talking to people who share the same interest as me :) Also, if I ask a lot of questions it's because I am new to this kind of stuff but I would like to be better at it so please bear with me lol.

This case caught my attention after watching the Buzzfeed Unsolved episode on the case (a cute, quirky little show on youtube that vaguely describes unsolved cases in about 20 min).

I have several questions about this case but I will try to refrain from asking all of them until I have had the chance to read as much as I am allowed to see (not a full member but its better than nothing!)

I will state that the thing that infuriates me the most about this case, other then it not being solved and children were murdered obviously, is how much people (not here but on other places I have read things on) is how much Johnny and Dana's (especially his) names are dragged through the mud. I have heard so many things about them being drug dealers, informants for the police, man whores, the list goes on. I think it infuriates me because as it is integral to talk about this sort of stuff with a case like this, you can't steer from the fact that these were two KIDS. I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way.

(Also that above statement was not directed towards anyone here, just stuff I have read on a few other websites)

Thanks for having me :)

I have been interested in this case for a few years now, this one and the springfield 3 are two crimes I'd like to see officially solved.

In terms of my knowledge of the case I've read a lot but looking at this forum now I can see there's so much more that I can learn from those who have been researching and studying this case for so long..

Thanks for bringing the forum back online!

But it is quality. It's intelligent, witty, and has enough sense to have a story arc well hidden.

I recommend it to any enthusiast of any genre where seeing the puzzle is key.

It's like Columbo, without the first fifteen minutes spelling out how the crime is committed. Instead, it's you figuring out who the liars are without it being tattoed on your forehead first. It's a very interesting series.

I never got into this kinda shit before working the Keddie case. As a film editor in Hwood, I quickly saw how most edits are meant to imply a solve- even in a candy commercial. Edits are most often implications of what follows. Same goes with the rock vids I edited. "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty, which I helped cut and edit, tells a story far more exact than the lyrics. But the storytelling wasn't in the editing. It was DIRECTION. Kier McFarlane. He developed and filmed a story which took the lyrics far beyond their origin. In doing so, he complicated and finalized the implications in a way which crush the ambiguity of the real lyric. Great vid, though, right? Kim Basinger was never hotter, right?

A great song reduced to the meaning of a fucking MTV video. Hey, this as around the time I worked on "Pocket of a Clown" by Dwight Yoakum. Hey, I love Dwight, he's cool as fuck (and one helluva actor, Slingblade) But nothing was as good as editing the girls trampoline footage. Ooh-ahh, ooh-ahh, ooh-ahh, ooh-ahh!

Same goes with writing. Read Sherlock Holmes, and it spells itself out for you to lap up. That isn't editing, it's direction. By the author. Hooked, lined, and sinkered.

Walk into 28, and it's a fucking nightmare. But it is still laid out as a story on full display, if your eyes are big enough to see.

Biff would be over the top about this. As it happened, he died the night Ache and I were driving through Sac, after going to Keddie and Camp Eighteen. Something like April 21, 2011.

They weren't my kids.
I was the step-father, and loved them as my own.

The book we bought in Vegas is . That's the book my youngest learned from on his own, after being taught at 'school' that he couldn't read. He did that during my after-school TIME OUT. I knew he loved the book, so I heard him reading it aloud, alone, during TIME OUT, and stuck a camera around the corner to catch it.

How often can you see a kid learning how to read, to tie his own shoes, to be his/her own person? To me, that's what I wanted on camera. To remember, to cherish, to share when they were old enough not to hate me for filming it.

I have him on video looking at the words, then the pictures, so he could figure out the words I said so often when putting him to bed. He'd memorized enough to figure out the words on paper, so what he was taught in school wasn't so daunting or embarrassing by the teacher's methods.

He was awarded not just 'Best Improved' reader that year, he got another ribbon as BEST READER.

NEVER leave the education of others up to others, as your involvement in daily life makes you, by example, the best/worst teacher every day.

The last book we read together, before I lost him? We were reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and I kept asking if he needed help with the olde language and meaning. Nope, he got it.

He was seven when we read our last book together. We spent the day together, then watched his choice, Tremors 3. I'd shown him the first Tremors film as a "Scary Saturday Night" with home-made popcorn, butter and salt, and on the couch under a blanket. Cozy, warm, and chilled. Do you remember, as a kid, how comfortable it would be to be under a favorite blanket, watching Disney on Sunday, then someone would move, adjust their leg, and completely break the comfort vibe you had going?

It was that kind of mellow comfort.

He'd gone from school alert as 'illiterate' to Seuss to TimeOut teaching himself to best reader to Twain in months.

We literally fell asleep reading that book. Together.

First, I'd heard tons of rumors. Few line up. Fewer still from people who've been vetted by their info proving TRUE. VETTING is when not only does their background prove, but the majority of info they give is NOT rumor, not common knowledge, but verified in reports, logic, other vetted sources, etc. That's a 101 lesson.

Second, I read the full Tina report several times- where she and a friend were molested at said friend's trailer park. Then how PCSO's completely heinous and bigoted 'investigation' pitted two girls against PCSO's insolence towards victim and law alike. Then how PCSO went lookin for Sue and couldn't find her, yet Tina was wandering around at Downtown Trailer Park, exactly where she'd been molested days prior- with the culprit just in talks with PCSO about getting a lawyer to address the accusation.

You see 'shitty cops' and 'shitty mom' in that single scenaria.

Factor in what I've learned by discounting clearly fraudulent rumors, while re-assessing the wheat and chaff of what's left for nearly a decade.

Also, I did write a memoir, as cheerwine mentioned, in response to the true insult of 'Dmac, how many kids do you have?' I just didn't link it to the bullshit of the original, moronic question.

For veterans in particular go to any Veterans of Foreign Wars post, any County Service Officer, any military organization such as DAV, American Legion, Project Healing Waters.

or call the Veterans Crisis Line at 800.273.8255 press 1. Take that one step to save a life.

Why?

Because they defile the core meaning of the stripes they wore. They are fucking scum.

Most cops are good. Most military personnel are good. Good? Fuck OFF! They are first responders, heroes.

Perhaps my attention to the corruption behind Keddie imparts a distinct opinion or political rationale. No. I came from a very abusive military family, I've been brutalized by pigs for no crime other than long hair (I grew it long to make wigs for kids with leukemia), but I love the military, cops in general, first responders.

Read past my online background, here's the important bit:

Some twenty US vets commit suicide daily. That is beyond disastrously unacceptable behavior by the rest of us. of any vet in danger! Hell, we need to recognize and help anyone who shows signs of the simplest death to prevent: SUICIDE.

Humans can do much better than this. We must.

Sociopaths are major control freaks, and the idea of truly loving anyone besides themselves is completely foreign to them, hence jealousy not really being at play here.

I think the story is irrational- until you consider Nina's age and probable lack of mental faculties. Consider that when choosing to ignore her recent "memories" of the murders and aftermath.

And, on a funny note, isn't just ALWAYS THE CASE?! You have a , then the minute you sell it off, you need one!

Here's a line I recall from the first time I heard it as an adult (it meant nothing to me before I knew drugs and how impossibly fucked this line is:

""

Webb made better TV, particularly the groundbreaking EMERGENCY series in the 70s. When he made ADAM-12, he basically retooled DRAGNET into a squad team's daily calls. He was Malloy, Reed was Gannon. A-12 began as cheesy as DRAGNET, but smoothed out. Still almost always hinky, but rarely as obvious as when Webb was so directly involved. For instance, Martin Milner had been a successful child actor, yet Adam 12 made everyone think Webb had taken the 6x6x12 timber from his ass and shoved it up Milner's. Only after a couple seasons, the characters- AND ACTORS- could relax and put personalities into their game.

By the final season of A12, Reed's hair was criminally woolly. Some may say the series was tired. But it wasn't. It was finally dealing with reality in a harsh way.

Best Example: In episode X-Force, Reed and Malloy find a pervert who did something awful to a child. Malloy finds the girl in the perp's house, calls for Reed, and runs after the perp. Reed comes to the scene, and almost retches at what he sees before calling for backup. Malloy finds the perp, struggles with him, cuffs him, and continues to rough him up as the sicko berates him.

That's about as real as a12, much less TV as a whole, got to admitting child molestation. The way it was shot is impressive. It says a lot without showing anything but disaster. I recommend you watch that episode and try to find an earlier example of something so horrific explained so deftly and obviously on US TV. It's a short and devastating scene.

I don't want to berate that episode for how poorly it dealt with IA (internal affairs) procedures and how hoaky that is, just that it put child abduction/molestation/murder on the fucking map for America to see. That is a very important moment in TV history.

A-12 is a better show than most recall. It's an earmark, a history lesson on how simply many issues were resolved without police murdering innocents. It's also a joke, concerning how day-2-day is taught and done. Beyond the fact we know ADAM 12 was a big lie to the American public, watch this child molestation episode and tell us what you take away from it:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5v2mxg

Something else of note: The overhead and outdoor shots of the HQ where Adam 12 was filmed? It's one of the most notorious LAPD stations in LAPD history, where heavyweights in the LAPD Drug and Gang taskforces were heads of local gangs, and also heads of "protection" for big rappers. Triple-dipping gangbangers as ultra-cops at Adam 12 Drug Enforcement? RING ANY MOTHERFUCKING BELLS?? Sorry, bruise a knee and if you call a cop, your aunt gets whacked.

You may think I'm joking. I've posted about it elsewhere on the forum, with links to the connections to gangs and murders and rap. LA Times, not dmac delusions. The squad building was LAPD Rampart. barely touches what made Malloy and Reed resign in disgrace.

Amazing how I make a running joke on the forum only prove police corruption is ongoing, and much further-reaching, than we'd previously acknowledged.

Without Malloy pulling that stick out of his ass, and the scripts getting barely realistic, I'd never have researched and found the TV cop station is the now-closed Rampart station.

BTW, Jack Webb never called the Adam 12 station by name. He used RAMPART as the fictitious name of the hospital of his next hit, EMERGENCY.

EMERGENCY is Webb's most important creation. He not only closely dramatized the truth in the 2-hour soapy debut, that show is responsible for spreading LA-style ER units across America, is responsible for people knowing the basics of when someone's in trouble- the early 70s ERT training, and- most importantly- for putting so many men and women into that most important first-responder field. Without any doubt, EMERGENCY! put "emergency responders" into the worldwide lexicon.

When casting EMERGENCY, Webb was open minded. A notorious far right-winger, he not only cast his ex-wife, Julie London, as the lead nurse... he cast her new husband, Bobby Troupe as the 2nd lead doctor on EMERGENCY. Troupe was a jazz pianist bandleader, Julie was a sultry, smoky singer of pop standards and jazz. Troupe even wrote the song, "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66", which became a tv theme for the show Malloy- err, Martin Milner- starred in: Route 66.

Unless there was evil-levels of spite in those choices, it makes Jack Webb far damned cooler than I'd suspected. Of course, paying his ex AND her new hubbie to work his shows meant there was ZERO divorce settlement, so it was a Hollywood arrangement?

See, even this gets sick and twisted down the HWood Reality Sewer.

I can take Adam 12 from Jack Webb's TV pride to a proved insider gangland drug-fuck-murder scandal with one article, yet we've put hundreds of leads together, all pointing to our understanding of widespread corruption between SOME members of PCSO and SOME members of DOJ, and everyone freaks out like a puppy's tail crushed by a kitten's paw?!

Fuck you maggots and maggots. PCSO and CA-DOJ webt in with cover-up as the only outcome. Fuck you morons for not seeing it.

Read my other memoirs on this site, if you're qualified enough to recognize them

Explain why my history, in FAR TOO MANY ways, mirrors the Sharps.

I've been in the most horrid circumstances of "military life", as I was born into that fucked system. I've seen it and LIVED IT.

Sheila, and so many others, begged for help. We found the truth, and they bailed because they didn't want ALL the TRUTH out.

Sorry, Sheila can take your limp excuses and walk away, but the truth is:

lies are lies.

Had Sheila told the truth about Sue in 1981-2008, I'd never have needed to work or solve this puke case. Her lies, though, got me interested. Her many lies dislodged many lies she's gonna say she's unaware of. Her denials of Sue, being who Sue was, is what led her to "break" and leave this forum. Facts are, SHEILA IS A LIAR. She spends more time begging for info, while denying her mother was sexually active. Well, Sue often left her and the others alone while she slept around. Including the nights just prior to the murders of FOUR.

The intended victim was Sue. Nobody else.

-------------------

Sue was a slut? Right!

Just as most males are sluts, but never called that vulgar term. I'm a male, I'm super-sexy, I had less partners in a year than Sue had in a week. This isn't about ACTIONS, it's about PERCEPTIONS. Marty was a slut? Probably, not compared to Loon- nobody on the WP RR Tunnel Team could prop Loon's legs wider than they already were.

Let's ask Marty, Loon, all the killers how many partners they had. Then let's do detailed studies on perception, information, personal analyses, and reflection on sex between eras, angles, sexes, couplings, or marriages.

This isn't about whether Sue was a slut, it wasn't about consensual sex. This was about FUCK.

Ask if you don't figure it out. I'll explain it.

TRUTH: Sheila has lied for 38 years about family life, about what she KNOWS, about what she heard, about EVERYTHING if it protects Sue from the truth: SUE SLEPT AROUND A LOT

SUE WAS HAVING AN 'AFFAIR' WITH MARTY. Or was it cash, in Sue's opinion?

Sheila's "book" is vile trash. To hide the truth, Sheila is a blatant whore of the truth, a whore of her bullshit story, because SHEILA IS WILFULLY LYING throughout. If Sheila wants to end the torment of her life? She's been lying about what she knows and she needs to fess up.

Back when I joined up, Sheila was always my first goal, to get her to answer simple Qs. To find she knew and lied from so early on only destroys her fabric. I hope her the best, but she's never been honest about the murders. For her to establish a lifestyle as if she had? Yet another PURE FRAUD.

I hope the best for Sheila, but her lies about the case, and our work, have been a a cheap shot by a fucknut "victim" who WANTS to stop the truth. How can anyone find her less repulsive than Justin?

SHEILA HAS DONE MORE PR TO LIE ABOUT THE TRUTH THAN ANYONE IN THIS CASE. She gets the cameras rolling and does a sob story LIE.
FUCKING LIE.

I think the way Sue and Tina fought the killers, then John and Dana running to their defense, will define who they really are. I believe the crime scene shows Sue an incredible hero, and Tina so immediate and reactionary- alerting so many. And Johnny and Dana? They ran TOWARDS trouble to defend. NOT AWAY, as LE lied for 35 years.

Long ago, I figured that out. I don't care about mass perception, but I fell in love with the victims because they stuck together and defended each other.

Who sux ass? The killers? Yep. Corrupt LE? Yup. The liars?

YUP.

I already cared long before I figured out how cool these victims are for fighting back so hard.

PS: "MR MELTY-HEAD" is the proper name given to the GIF I built and use as my avatar. It's from a cartoon strip I found as a kid, and I turned it into a GIF animation before the term was known. I revisited this old animation when, in 2006, I realized the case was alive and severely crippled.

"Mr Melty Head" is me, or anyone, trying to figure out a case as fucked as Keddie was back in 2006, 2010 when I began looking in earnest.

Now, everyone assesses it means I'm deranged.

Thanks, but I like the kid who called me "Mr Melty Head" because this case still does that at times.

Close enuff fer govt werk.

You wrote a memoir.
I'm an English teacher (Spec. Ed all the way up to AP), and it was good.
I think you needed to get that out, and I'm glad you did.
Sometimes I worry I will come on here and find that you have given up, but doesn't happen.
I hope you will give yourself a break before you melt like your avatar.
You are really starting to give it to Shelia again, and I think you should stop; it's nobody's business but Shelia's what she remembers about her mother, and she just wants to remember the best, I bet. She should not be called a liar anymore. That's just wrong.
Why do you want to solve these murders so badly?
Can you answer that question for me?
Is it because you want to just figure it out, and your attitude towards Shelia is just a means to end, or do you care about the people that died?
Why?

Graham Chapman, master of wit and drink, went on to say that formal jokes kill wit. I fully agree. Why not, i'm drinking Graham's urine...

I asked Graham about his first joke and he quite soberly destroyed all moronic merit found in UK crust. I recall asking the same Q to Terry Jones, and he said it was moving his tray so his gran poured custard on his mat rather than his dessert.
Graham "wrote" with John Cleese, yet all that tall bald bastard belches about is Fawlty humor. Graham Chapma, if you had the guts to wait for the worthless fuck, was the best writer and actor in Python. His are the jokes for which Cleese now apologizes.

Graham is true, and most US TV is trite shit.

The thread comes full-circle. I asked about Joan Armatrading, and commented how I found Tracy Chapman's voice so similar. It wasn't from her hit, "Fast Car".

Please listen to "Fast Car", in the smaller arrangement Tracy had in mind and cut. With the vocals and lyrics and meanings so much more present and palpable.

How long did it take Springsteen to get this good about hard times and gasoline? And this chick bettered Bruce by being this fierce and solemn and true out the gate.

And she did it without sex or sexism.

If you listen, it's a heartbreaker of American proportions.

I'm in my mid-40s, just plain caucasian, and a divorced father of two little ones. I still play music and make art: for bands, other projects, and for my own personal gratification. I definitely don't have the same attitude or expectations (of myself or the world) that I did ten years ago. I'm proud of what I've done but don't kid myself that it matters much to the world at large. is a very incomplete collection of some of my stuff.

I am a mid-level 9-5 guy but that probably has more to do with the fact that I didn't get a "real" job-- i.e. work for someone else or a company-- until into my 30's. What I do for work is not directly creative but that doesn't bug me. I'm in Marketing. I know that creative work is still work. Even being in a band or making music for a living only affords an artist to focus on art part of the time. It's still a slog, still work.

Divorced? Alone? Not judging, but your endeavors elapse time. Read "Death of a Salesman" again, and Twain becomes the objective antagonist you never noticed,

You love the arts, and your tastes are antiquated enough to make you a has-been in that field. You still love music, but it's an outlet rather than a resource.

You are 37, mixed race as white, doing a 9-5 gig for which you would kill the boss just to see you doing something worthwhile.

Anyone SANG like they wanted to sound. They emulated others, which is accent and everything. Joe said "No, be Dylan but ignore Dylan. Just be you" which led to big success and changes. Others were doing it. Ray Davies never tried to sound Yank unless he was mocking us. Mick's a fucking joke, no comment. Daltrey couldn't sing, he had a limited range, so he was always evolving away from covers to Pete's music to THE WHO as a brand, to just being comfortable in his own skin.

Steve Gibbons, from Day One, never tried to sound like anyone but Steve.

And for no other reason than I love Mott the Hoople, hear one of their lest-loved masterpieces:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG-rSADn_Y4

This is the moment I first heard Mott the Hoople:

mott.jpg
It's near the start of Martin Scorcese's first true masterpiece, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". Ellen Burstyn, fresh off the success of The Exorcist, had Hollywood at her feet. She had full choice to her next project, and she chose "this brash, new, young director who I knew had vision". Kris Kristofferson blew me out as the beau, and the final scene in the film is the product of Kris improvising a 'happy ending' to a script missing such.

I woke up in the middle of the night as a kid, maybe 1978, and watched the entire film. I was floored by the whole thing, REALITY in a movie? Ellen! Wow! Kris is the best songwriter, but can't hold a bucket or a tune. He's incredibly believable as the Guy in this film. Lutter 3 is perfect as the son, and Jodie Foster just kicks ass stealing and sippin' ripple. Lutter's performance is pure fire, as I was around that sage age when I saw it and he made ALL of it believable. His bullshit, his boredom, his frustration, hope, love, all perfectly exploited through Lutter III.

Not of any particular merit, here's another HEAD HANDS AND FEET song. It's just so damned good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEgt_Y6J ... e=youtu.be

Nikki and I would argue about everything, but for fun: Fave song off any given album, particularly Stones. Nikki was the consummate professional Stones fan, touring alongside and playing the night before, then putting photos of himself and friends, front row, at the next Stones gig, He loved them that much.

He told me a lot, we were writing two books together. I mean it when I say 'brother'.

Nikki once asked, "Fave Fairport drummer?" No question, I replied "Dave Mattacks". Incredible drummer, I love his timing and idiosyncrasies.

"FUCK NOOOOO! Fuck! NO! Bruce Rowland!"

Then I realized Bruce was the drummer for a turbulent phase of post-Denny/Thompson Fairport. He wasn't just in the Grease Band with Joe Cocker, not just in Juicy Lucy, and not just the best drummer Ronnie Lane had.

Slim Chance was a perfect name. I'm so glad the band reformed for our movie, and continue to regularly gig and record. Steve Simpson? Nice guy, but I've always been a nutter for Charlie Hart, who was playing in several of my fave bands when I lived in London. Jim McCarty from Yardbirds asked me to take him to a gig of my choice, so I took him to see Juice On the Loose. Look them up. Legendary.

In one day, I went from Rupe's home near Kensal Green to the tube to the platforms at Euston to Guildford to taxi to Kenney Jones estate. Kenney drove me back to Guildford hours later. Train to London, tube to Charlie Hart's pub. He likes me, drives me home and we talk for a couple hours.

That night I'd been invited to go to Shepparton in west London to meet a friend who was working with the Who. It would have been great to meet up. The Who were rehearsing Quad for tour, and John was still alive. I knew Pete, John, Rabbit, and Billy Nicholls. Pete and Billy, of course, appeared in the Ronnie film, but I did not appear to see the Who rehearse. I was too fucking tired, having spent the day at their former drummer's house. All kinds of coincidences happen. See how many you missed just in my one day in London in December 2000? And that's the shit I remember well enough to talk about.

When funding ran out to complete the film, Pete Townshend paid. Little known fact. He was repaid, but I'm still out for every dime I put into Ronnie Lane. The bastard never did shit for me, worthless gimp.

Fuck You Ronnie, and you're the best!

Here they are on BBC's OGWT. 71

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aIft448lBA

I was a massive Soft Boys fan. Their Rolling Stones is perfect, "Rock-n-Roll Toilet". When I interviewed him first, he was translucent/boring. Then we found my friend had fucked up nad not properly recorded anything. I got anotyher interview, and he was more pissed than boring. I said, "Look, it doesn't have to be a straight interview. I can bring up a typical question and you can riff on it, like Viv doing a Bonzo sketch"

"What, you think I'm Viv Stanshall?!"

Shit, I loved the guy and he thought that compliment was a turd down his throat? Fuck Robyn.

But Nikki and Robyn and Billy Bragg and REM all toured around for awhile as a side project from REM. It also helped start the REMologu that became the album they did with Warren Zevon. MAGIC.

Robyn may have been an asshole, but he was just rude, he felt insulted by the true compliment. He was and is still a gent. He did a second interview that night.

My Crimely "tape op moment" overcome by an angry Robyn.

I later interviewed Squeeze when Soft Boys bassist was in on keys. Andy Metcalfe. They reformed and neither mentioned me in their loving liner notes about how the reunion happened. Aw, those rash young punks!

I'm so fond of how he looked at the TI process. He saw so many ideas but his fixation was palpable, and he got it to me via voice, text, email, whatever.

His "last album" is a fucking joke. Has nothing to do with him or his ideas, much his cover concept. He didn't want to fuck with TI< so he wanted a new approach. I told him to stop paying for Stones when he was one.

Nikki was the Endless Summer of punk.

My parents had dreams of jobs and retirement. Look what happened. Reagan and shit trickles into Trump. Their legacy? I agree about music falling mostly into the good or bad bucket, rather than being judged based on what sort of stylistic bucket it might fall into. I love such an array of different kinds of music-- from the most delicate/poetic to the raw simplicity of the Stooges. My way of putting it is that I like all music, there's just some I don't care to listen to. Maybe more honest is that I respect the process of making and performing music, even if I don't totally grok it.

And now you share that you were friends with Nikki Sudden? Again, amazed. Swell Maps and both his and Epic Soundtracks' solo work are great examples of the kind of the outside-the-lines talent and the audacity to back it up that I have so much respect (and am inspired by). Some might call them eccentrics, but I think that it's usually the level of success of those unique artists that earn them that kind of adjective. Reminded of others in a similar vein that I love -- Robyn Hitchcock, Martin Newell/Cleaners from Venus, or Felt's Lawrence Hayward. I also love Brian Wilson and to me, he's cut from that same cloth, just as weird, challenging, and important. Different because his group was massive comparatively.

Ironically, Kevin Rowlands is one of the only big names in my last post that I did have the chance to meet. It was at the Reading Festival in 99 or 2000 and I was there officially because a band I worked with was playing. It was also his big solo comeback after his recently released comeback covers album; the one that included an unironic cover of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All." Even though we'd just met, he shared a story of his years strung out on drugs living in a squat, essentially staying high and in bed waiting for increasingly less-frequent and smaller royalty checks to support his habit. I love his music, even through more complicated and less successful stuff and his clear audacity in how he updated his look and sound in dramatic ways. That day at Reading he was not well-received, singing in an audacious dress he'd designed himself. Clearly subverting expectations, which is an attitude I can appreciate.

And Nick Lowe-- a true hero. From the "California by way of Albion" sound of the early Brinsley Schwarz and everything since, I'm a fan. I'm also super interested in the strong Bay Area, CA elements in early pub rock. Austin de Lone's Eggs Over Easy and Clover both playing crucial roles in that story.

I hate label, but I understand them for useful conversation- not for commercial manipulation, which is the genesis of labels. I paraphrased Ronnie Lane a few times. When he said, "I don't know what happened to Rough Mix", I said, "It was brilliant. Sheer genius." "Oh? Wowee! Then why didn't it do better?" "Well, lots of great albums don't do better. Look at Tom Jones, still selling albums!"

At that point, he broke and laughingly, but sternly, said, "Now, Dave, Tom speaks very highly of you!" His point being Tom had some great tunes and isn't a label. Labels kill. My distillation is take all individually and there's really only two kinds of music: good and bad. With plenty of room for grey-area argument.

Knew Phil Lynott, met Gary Moore and the original lead guitarist (Irish not Yank) from Thin Lizzy at a gig Phil did with a band he'd played with and produced, Auto Da Fé. Speaking of soul singers, Gay Woods fronted the band. The were at BBC Paris Studios, and I was there to interview the opening, the Call. Phil's and Garry's deaths pissed me off more than surprised me. Kinda like expecting to hear the same from Mick Taylor.

I met a friend through the Faces site I run, and ended up befriending him and talking to him from home to Berlin or wherever weekly, running through songs together on guitar (he taught me Lane's "Debris", some odd chords I couldn't figure). I ended up running his website, then managing him. I did the cover art for his last album, "Treasure Island", and was prepping mockups for his latest when he died after a tour gig in New York. He fronted the band most UK punk scholars label as a first, if not the first: Swell Maps. His brother, Epic Soundtracks, was so fucking awesome! his music is so much easier for me to like than Nikki's, but that's mainly because I was his friend long before I ever listened to his music.

He's send TI demos as to inspire me on the cover art? No, he was just a music lover who ENJOYED sharing music that moved him, hoping others enjoy the odd bits others can't understand. We sent CDs and MP3 burns back and forth. The last Great Gasp was we found out we were both heavily into Big Star, and he had no rare tracks. I had demos, outtakes, alt productions, live. He confided, "I gotta hear this. It was my brother's favorite band." He died while I was compiling. Nikki was a great guy who took many risks, both musically and personally. A truly lost brother of mine. When he died, it put the nail in the coffin for me to get the fuck away from music for a while.

Ten Long Years.

Earlier, in 00, I was in the UK to get the "Faces" project off the ground. BBC had not heard of it. Ian McLagan had all but washed his hands of us. I stayed with Rupe off Portobello, worked the scene during the day, shopped Portobello Mkt on the way home, and often cooked dinner for them upon my return. This was just pre-9/11, and Rupe's son gasped when I first unpacked my knives. Thought I was a nutter, not a chef. The frst morning of my stay at Rupe's, we took a walk to familiarize me with his neighborhood. Across the bridge to the cemetery. He said, "They're about to knock down these gasworks, so I wouldn't be surprised if Paul Simonon isn't here painting them!" It was raining, but the joke was true: Clash bassist Paul, cum renowned cityscapist, was indeed painting the scene. Rupe asked, "how can you paint in the rain?" Being a painter, I said, "He's painting in oils. Water runs off." Well, it does far more than that, but Paul was happier talking about the Clash from guys who weren't idiots about his background.

I'm a massive collector of Clash, and Mick Jones is a gent but we've never made contact. I was blown down by Sir John Mellor's sudden death, as we were making arrangements to do an interview. Suburban life will kill ya! Just kidding, as Strummer was at a career peak, top form, when he died in his garage of a heart attack after taking his dogs out or a stroll. Believe it or not, THAT s the death I wish upon myself. He died with a balanced, grooving, and fulfilled HAPPY life.

Kevin's the only guy in your last post I've never met. He was poison for decades, but he killed his past almost as cleanly as Strummer did with the Busking Clash: an intentional IMPLOSION to destroy the myth, the band, the future.

What can I say about Nick Lowe? Fantastic guy, and his music is boundless, his knowledge without end. Bops off a crotch-crunching earbender of little value other than top pop, then he submits a song to his step dad, who doesn't put it to tape for two decades. Johnny Cash. The Beast In Me. Nick wrote it with John as the voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8tGCVavS5s

Small aside. When I first met Nick, it was at Dingwalls where he was doing a residency with Paul Carrack on dual LV. When Mac went to London in 2000, it was Dingwalls, a couple days after my arrival. So many were there, Kenney Jones and Boz Burrell were hanging out by the bar behind the wall. Lotsa famous faces, and Faces fans made up as Rod or even Tetsu. That bit was so fucking weird, until I realized Mac's fame in Japan brought a batch over just for his Dingwalls gigs.

Flash forward to 2016 at the SXSW after-party (ask who the dueling hosts were!) and this doll is going on about her invention, a board game about Brinsley Schwartz. I said, "is it basically like Life, where you take a spin? "Go to America blindfolded with no gear, play in front of a death squad of critics inexplicably flown there too?"

She loved me. She knew I already knew the game.

Here's a song by an artist I love, Ted Leo. I had the opportunity to work with him for years and have seen him play hundreds of times but it's always electrifying. He's an unapologetic punk kid grown up with endless heart, spirit, and in my opinion, talent. His music effortlessly unifies what might seem like disparate elements. I hear touches of Phil Lynott, Nick Lowe, The Clash, Kevin Rowland, but it's also all his own.

As for Father John Misty... I'm impressed by the music though not that excited by his persona. That song you shared, Robin, is excellent. I just tend to respect an artist that is more earnest, that is undeniably saying and showing who they are with their music. I've seen FJM a few times and to me, his show comes across as artifice, which I don't dig as much.

We went out, and went pubcrawling. Mostly them showing us people who met and knew Ronnie. We somehow made it back to the Camm, and I was gobsmacked to have Ronnie's own guitar handed to me. "Play something!" All I could think of was a song by Ronnie I never learned, so I played a song by him I'd transcribed for the Faces site. Annie. My favorite song of all time. And I learned on that vry trip what the lyrics meant, and who they referred to. "Feckin' 'ell!"

It was Sue's house, the Camm, that burnt.

Annie is a word beloved by me. As a joke, if Tina's name had been Annie, I woulda solved this in 2010. I'll say it before anyone else did.

My dog, Tor, ran for a ball. He nearly got hit by a car. A girl by him said, "will he bite?" "No, dear, no. He likes everyone."

My dog changed my entire life. Hell, that girl's name was Annie. Yep.

When I first met them, Luke was mebbe eight and Rube still in arms. Little Ruben, Ronnie called him Ruby. That's when I was maybe 17, first interviewing Ronnie. He invited me back. Only a few musos have liked me enough to do that. Mac was one. Si Kirke another, Woody. Paul Rodgers. Pete Townshend. Kenney Jones. Eric. fuck I've lost count. They all invited me back, sick fuckers.

Taken outside of Ronnie's house in Wales. This is where they were raised, this is where Ronnie's solo albums were made. This is where rock stars came for r&r. This is where Eric Clapton, drunk and collapsed in a fucking wheelbarrow, wrote "Wonderful Tonight"

True fucking story. No wonder Eric wanted to be in the film. He loved Ronnie. Still does.

The song is about Patti, the girl he stole from his best mate, Harry Georgeoson.

I asked Linda about a track she did in 75 with Richard, the perfect addition they made to the above vid about Thatcher. Linda said, "I don't like my voice. I don't remember much". I played her the song and she blew me down "I know that's me, once you played it I remembered. I don't often like my voice, but I really like that. " She actually said "thank you", but she really meant it.

No, thank YOU!

The Flatlanders reformed that night at Antone's. They played with Double Trouble as the rhythm section. SRV was alive that night. It was a magic night, and the third time I ran into Dylan's hero, Ramblin' Jack.

Joe's a class guy. FFS, I walked into Antone's in the afternnon, and he was with a party at a table and broke away to meet me. "Lost?" "Naw, I just heard there's a secret gig tonight and you're fucking lying". "Guilty and happy".

Butch Hancock debuted a song that stung my ears. I was shooting looks at Jeff, my college pal, and mouthing "Dylan!" It was the most awesome screed against prezzy Bush. Fucking amazing.

Then Jimmie Dale Gilmore played a set, with his son! oy FUCK one eargasm after another.

EDIT: wrong photo: I took this one, I was behind the camera.

I have a very private Facebook page, and it's so nice to have heroes of mine, musical and otherwise, connect to me and contact me socially or privately. Believe me, Keddie usually brings me nothing but grief. But so many of you I've grown to know through this distinguished and awful experience, and you mean so much to me. Group? Naw. Yeah, mebbe, we are better than most.

Individually. Many of you I now know and am fucked by a fist to know your real name against your online tag.

dmac? I got that the first day of work at Overstock.com. "Dave? McWhat?? Dmac."

I first interviewed Ian as he recorded "A Spot of Interference" at Livingstone. I was next door with the Box of Frogs (Yardbirds) laying down "Back Where I Started".

It's the studio I reffed in an earlier post, about telling Pete Buck of REM about how cool Livingstone was. His argument that day was the studio is indifferent to the magic of music. Well, fuck me, REM's next album was done at Livingstone. Someone changed his path of logic.

The Beeb immediately requested a re-edit: make it longer. They bumped it to BBC1.

When it debuted in America, at Austin's SXSW, it was April 1, Ronnie's birthday. I was proper chuffed on that alone. Then Joe Ely approached me at the theater, and I made him walk away crying. I said something very personal and respectful about a common friend who had recently passed, and he didn't want me to see him crash. At the after party, he came up to me as an old friend. Shit, with Ronnie in common, he knew I was the real deal. Joe Ely is a top class act, and his generosity is impeccable.

April 11 is when the murders happened. April 14 is my birthday. I heard of the murders on the 12th. My best friend was in an accident on the 10th, tken off support and died on my birthday. I called the hospital, they only said, "he passed". Fucking dispassionate evil.

My dad said, "get the fuck back to work". Fuck my dad, fuck the lot.

If you wanna know why this case hits me, I have no fucking clue. Coincidences. My love of Fugs, and that I read Helter Skelter when I was ten? Shit, Ed Sanders wrote the best book about Manson.

This case found me. I found I was good at deducing shit into fact. In this case. I found building a 3-d world of facts out of minutiae the most valuable tool for me to properly see what could happen, what did happen.

Since I'm putting myself out there, I figured everyone deserves an explanation of why I'm the asshole-in-charge. I don't have an answer. But I'm the one who fights for the underdog. Full stop.

I've seen that doc and it's great. I'm a sucker for almost any music film, scripted or doc. No matter how bad they are, somehow I'm always captivated. But this one was excellent, a story that needed to be told with great interviews and even cooler original footage. Floored that you're responsible for commemorating Ronnie Lane's story and thankful you shared that bit of your own story.

I missed replying to your mention of Joe Boyd earlier but I'm a fan. A company I was involved with helped promote , an event hosted by City Arts & Lectures. Didn't get to meet him personally and it's been years since I read his book but Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson...? Hard to argue with that career.

Speaking of Fairport, Iain Matthews is another one of my favorites. So many different styles that he easily seems to excel playing. A great songwriter and interpreter of others' work, like Jimmy Webb and Gene Clark. This song is undeniable, in my book.

The BBC doc I made was about Ronnie, called "Passing Show: The Life and Music of Ronnie Lane". I did it with a pal I met thru Mac McLagan, Rupe Williams. Mac and I knew each other because my 20 minute interview with him turned into many hours, and I ended up building and running the-faces.com. Mac turned me onto Rupe, who he met while doing "Never Mind the Bollocks". Mac's idea is we would do a retro of Faces material, an easy-peasy piece with licensing clean thru the Beeb.

After a few phone calls with Rupe, I said, "you know, fuck this. We won't get this opportunity again, and we need to do the right thing. We need to tell Ronnie's story. Anybody can do a retro on the Faces, Fuck the Faces." When we told Mac, he exploded: "You stupid fuckers don't know what you're up against! The licensing alone!" It was easy as piss. Everyone involved jumped at the chance. We couldn't get Wood on tape simply due to shit schedules, and he was back on the booze. Bad timing, great guy.

Well, Mac sat next to me, crying his eyes out, when the film debuted at SXSW.

It was Ronnie Lane I spent the day with prior to meeting Woody at Si Kirke's. It was Ronnie Lane's vocal of "Ooh La La" that had Woody searching the bunkers of his Irish estate.

Lane wrote it, "Ooh La La", thinking of his dad. The Faces bashed it onto tape, and Plonk sang his lyrics as a guide for Rod. Stewart, the prick, showed up weeks later and slammed the song as rubbish. Wood knew better, and sang lead instead. Fuck Rod. As Mac said, when Rod put Ooh La La on an album a few years back, "Thirty years too fucking late to do Ronnie any good, mate."

I've visited three graves in my life. My grandparents. Tina's. Ronnie Lane's. We deposited weed and whiskey, and passed around a bottle of his fave whetter, Courvoisier. "We" was the entire crew of Passing Show: me, Rupe, John, and the beautiful Darinagh- the Irish lady who knew Rainy Boy Sleep.

You fucking nailed it.

Mind, Rod and Pete and Woody and Jimmy Page all paid for Ronnie's health care. My sincerest props to each, as they were proper gentlemen about it. Not one fucking word publicly. Jimmy is a jewel. He'd call Ronnie on each birthday, April Fool!

Fascinating to hear your stories about the Kinks and Pete Townsend. This one's a favorite of mine that he did, with the also incredibly talented Ronnie Lane (Faces, Small Faces). The story of why he did it -- out of love and respect for an artist he truly admired and considered a friend -- is also sweet.

Also loved this early demo of Pete's Behind Blue Eyes.

Early last year he was listed as missing. His body was found at shore. A funeral was held, the online videos show how highly he was loved by family and friends.

I pegged he'd committed suicide. I asked online, and a dear friend who helped make the documentary and knew him wouldn't commit to cause of death. Silence. Yeah, that incredibly talented, and it was suicide.

This is Ireland. No drugs involved, not even Ronnie Wood's downfall, Guinness. This talented guy topped himself for no known reason. Everything he said in the song pronounced understanding. He defied logic.

This shit pisses me off. Big time.

We spend so much time on Tina. What if we focused more on realistic goals? Saving suicides. I've stopped two that I know of. It's no uglier than anything PCSO photographed.

Aww, fuck...

I will carry over with some true anecdotes. I was young when I moved to London, and zits were my hell. Pre-amoxycillin. The Kinks asked more than anyone, "how old are you?!" One by one, they asked. At different times. On the stage, at Konk, at a gig in a urinal, they asked. "Oh, I thought so. You look it, but you act much older".

I took that as the coolest compliment from the band that put me there. Like Townshend asked some weird Qs but nothing like that compliment. Pete was weirded out when we talked, it was at his Boathouse studios. I'm there in April 82, so Pete's moaning about the solo albums ("I definitely took on too much to write solo albums and for the band, the contract is killing me") and talking about sessions for the next LP (It's Hard). He said, "this one is is so important. It has to be right." He's saying the first lp with Jones replacing Moon was fucked. He's saying what? Everything hinges on whether he can write 40 minutes of Who when he doesn't give a fuck about anything but those who he'd hurt by not delivering.

This has nothing to do with anything but voicing something about Trousers few know to mention. He's loose with money. He's not Rod Stewart or Mick Jagger: tight as two coats of paint. Townshend has never given me a pence, but when something happened to a common friend, he put 100,000 pounds right off the mark. When the film I talked about, where we used BBC equipment to sell the film to the BBC, we ran out of cash on the American leg. Pete had also seen the footage, and paid for completion. I cannot even begin to tell you of firsthand knowledge of those he's aided without call.

Many may mock Pete for selling "Love Ain't For Keeping" to a diapar ad, but I can attest to what a genuinely generous guy Pete is.

I know music biz is completely sideways and fucked. Then I look at politics. Not one guy as genuine as Pete Townshend in the batch.

I mentioned Joe Boyd earlier. Look him up. Find imdb and watch the docu he appeared in with Pete. Then wonder how the fuck Joe was at the birthpoint of all the shit he saw and made happen. Look up Joe Boyd, he's the Yank in the story that made all the Brit bands bigger and better in Britain.

To my knowledge, Boyd never tried to take anything to the US. He was fucking amazing. Hendrix Who Fairport Floyd Drake I can't explain how cool that fucker is.

It's implied how important the legendary UK DJ John Peel is in the film I produced, but Boyd and Townshend and Peel all had demonstrable results in the efforts they made to benefit my target. Peel died on holiday just before we were to film him. John rarely submitted to interviews, much less film. John Peel is the most perfect rock mind in history. Glyn Johns has too much brain dedicated to wines.

Sorry if I went a tad sideways, but it was stream-of-consciousness, and not riddled with newly-mined cussings. A win in the dmac column any day of the year.

I asked what he thought of a recent screening of Holy Grail. Terry Gilliam said he only sees the faults when he looks back, so he tries to look forward. He was recutting Jabbewocky. That is still a perfect answer, and I feel it almost daily.

This actually happened to me: I interviewed my hero, then went to kONK sTUDIOS and interviewed a Kink. The next day I'm at Si Kirke's house, the drummer for Bad Company. Ronnie Wood drops by. I said, "Ron, I was just at your mate's flat" He didn't believe me, called me a cheeky monkey fucker. That was a month before he and Si made the cover of Rolling Stone, and about 20 years before Woody knew we were real and he went digging into his Irish caves for outtakes and one song nobody found.

True fucking story.

Ronnie Wood asked Bo Diddley to learn a new chord, just an extension of something Bo used. Bo said. "I know three chords, and I ain't done with them yet".

Fucking purrfect.

I grew up in California, went to middle and high school in rural Southern Humboldt County, outside of a tiny little town along the Avenue of the Giants. I left the Bay Area suburbs just about to start the 8th grade thinking moving to the country was about as close to literally going back in time as was possible. , but it turned out to be pretty great for me in a lot of ways I couldn't have anticipated.

A relatively short time after I moved to the area, a non-commercial community radio station was launched. Not affiliated with a college, this little station was purely a passion project for the area locals who had organized and fundraised to get the station on the air. I was fourteen years old at the time and a friend and I were daydreaming out loud about how cool it would be to have our own radio show. A neighbor of my friend that worked at the station heard about our interest and said if we were serious we should come down to the station and give it a try. One Saturday afternoon, we went down to the station, housed in two converted vacation cottages in downtown Garberville, California and did just that. It was a good time and not as complicated to run the studio board as I thought it would be. My friend and I sent in applications to get our official FCC licenses and within a couple of weeks had a weekend 2 hour slot.

The friend didn't end up caring about the radio and faded out of the picture a few months later but I did it all through high school. The station's record collection and the new releases we'd receive gave me a good start on my own lifelong love of music and actually led to me working in the business for a time.

Also impressed that you made your own way to London at a such young age! Sounds like quite an experience from the few details you've shared. Always wanted to live there at least for a time, but the closest I ever really got traveling there as often as I could, either playing music or just to see friends. I guess I'm a bit an Anglophile going back to when I was a kid, fueled mostly by the excellent music an

I've seen all the Ricky Gervais stuff. I loved the original UK The Office after a friend showed the first season while visiting (same friend who'd shown me Steve Coogan's first series of I'm Alan Partridge as well as Tony Ferrino, Paul and Pauline Calf). Definitely going to track down and watch Detectorists.

Finally, it's crazy to think that you first came across the Keddie Murders because you were responsible for pulling stories off the wire service!

My best advice is to get close to Ricky Gervais. Watch his two wonderful short offerings of THE OFFICE, which is punctuated quite poignantly with the xmas special. Then watch his two series of EXTRAS, with the obligatory xmas send-off special. The weight he pulls is so fucking cool because he intentionally underutilizes it. Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Stewart, Bob DeNiro. Everyone is the butt of a cool joke Rick thought.

Gervais makes a name in the US as a host or as the 'originator', but to be understood is to see him in action, playing the exact shit he knows from hard knocks and is playing for entertainment AND enlightenment.

His take on job politics is metoo before hashtags existed.

What's fantastic about Detectorists is Mackenzie Crook, who played Gareth, the brilliant useless fascist from The Office, scripted, sold, and starred in this award-winning mindbender. With Toby Jones, who I have yet to see play poorly. Toby's just brimming. Most Yanks wouldn't know Mackenzie if they watched his clips from the Pirates of the Caribbean films back-to-back, but the Beeb backed him. It paid big, garnering an 8.7 score last time I looked at imdb. Many awards, well deserved. It's a complex of stories and themes, and the level of intelligence is astounding. I just watched the first series for the second time last week and was floored by how much I'd missed in the first round.

The funniest in-joke? "Zep?"

I was just walking home, remembering for some reason a cartoon I drew in college. It was in the earliest stages of the roadie shit, and my roommate was the drummer. We packed up all our shit, stored it in the apartment of an old roommate, and toured for six weeks. On our return, we secured a house, set up my stereo and his drums, and put the fx rack in line, and just 'kicked out the jams, motherfuckers!'. If we survived that night, we were okay for that house. No complaints, no cops. Three days later, we were back on the road.

My start in music began in talk radio. At thirteen, I called a local talk station and ended a letter I'd written with passionate yelps of "Mormons suck! Mormons suck!" I was happy as hell it was allowed on the air, because living in Utah amongst the most fake fucking bible-belching assholes is strenuous. Not only did it air, I was put on hold, and the host of the show turned out to be the radio station's PD (program director: boss) He hired me on the spot, at 13, to be a producer.
He's very mormon and is now a Senator. And still a mormon friend. My first day of work was a Thursday, and Colonel Sanders came into the studio. Yeah, him. The very first KFC still operates nearby. Nobody called to ask him Qs, so I had to fake a call. I'd heard a story about him on Paul Harvey's radio bit years prior, and asked him if it was true he'd staked out his ex's place, intent on kidnapping his kids, but got cold feet. He used the money he'd saved for the crime to start up KFC. He said it was true, but it still makes little sense. He did say Sir Harv did over-accentuate things, which was quite literate for what passed as a comatose, bloated white worm in a white suit. Yeah, the vest and the black bow tie.

A year later, I was pulling wires (UPI, AP, those news feeds) when I heard of the Keddie murders on Sunday afternoon. I was fucking there, man.

It's a story I pulled, and it's a story that was dormant in my brain until 2006, when I stumbled across it on the internet and it was said to be "unsolved". I thought, "Bullshit!"

How right I was.

By the time of the murders, I'd learned how to set up interviews with 'stars' in the news, in media, politics. The mighty and powerful on the other end of a WATTS line took me for a girl til my voice broke, so when they asked for a name and I had a girls voice and a boys name, they literally asked for credentials: "Can I speak to your boss?" That kind of shit was soooo funny the first hundred times. Then I realized my nuts weren't dropping according to plan.

I moved over to a sister station that played Top 40, and was transitioning to automation: the ruin of mankind. Mindless hours, so I spent them researching music and listening to and buying shit my station would never play. I was watching PBS furiously back then, including the first-ever broadcast of complete Python episodes, courtesy of Devillier/Donnegan Ent. out of Austin.

I was buying albums like they were going out of style- little did I know. Mott, Fugs, Zombies, Kinks, Who, Maytals, Meters, I bought it all. 8-tracks WERE going out of style. I bought a bootleg of Def Leppard before they were signed, on 8-track, for cents. The masking tape label of "Deaf Lepperd" intrigued me. Most 8s were 25 cents, so I bought an 8-track just to see if the music was cool. I bought "Show Some Emotion" on 8 because I could make out Glyn Johns' name on the bottom of the back label. Glyn? Andy? SOLD!

Then I sought and bought the vinyl.

Best 25 cents ever spent was in discovery.

Kinks. I bought the 77 album, Sleepwalker, and was smitten by the first damned cut. It immediately cut to my nuts: I was an anglophile. I liked Brit TV, my fave bands were Brits, I was watching a buttload of BBC/Thames on PBS, and Graham Chapman was the funniest man alive. So, as per Ray's lyrics, I dreamed up a move to London. In my junior year of high school, I did it. I moved to London, interviewed Pete Townshend, the Kinks, Yardbirds, and three of the Pythons: Two Terrys and a Graham. Lots of other interviews, lots of bands, every night was a new fucking band. REM! Yes, I saw them at the fucking Wardour location of the Marquee, where the Who played! Oh, fuck YEAH! I was alive! I interviewed them at IRS HQ, which was an adjunct of Island off of Portobello Rd, next to the church, Basing St Studios, where so much magic happened. Including the Koss bit I posted above.

Funnily, I was centered around Portobello, shopped there almost daily for the night's grub, when I moved to London in 2000 to start production of what became a BBC/VH-1 co-op about a musical hero of mine. We 'borrowed' costly BBC equipment over weekends, when they wouldn't miss it, then showed them the footage. SOLD!

My ins and outs with music is lifelong, I know a lot of the guys. I've done countless liner notes under assumed names. I've contributed to books. I've done cover art for major releases. I've done PR and rep work, and even fucking managed. One thing leads to another if you pull shit off with a clean bill of health.

My life may not seem grand, but I've packed many acts into this short story. And, as the legend fades to black, it's a short movie...

And a soundman? You've got an extensive knowledge of music and I wondered if you'd worked in it somehow (maybe I missed you referencing working in th biz in another post). Nonetheless, if you've done live sound, I've got no doubt you've got first hand experience with touring: good, bad, and otherwise.

Speaking of touring and comedy, did you watch Steve Coogan's Saxondale? That's a perennial fave.

They use metal detectors. Hobbyists.

I'd just watched the first series when I was approached by the gentleman who found the hammer in 2015. As a result, I said, "you're a detectorist?" I never would have known the term otherwise.

Now to the punch.

Johnny Flynn wrote the music for the show, and performs the vast majority. Of who does he remind you?

ps Chris, I was a soundman and know what a shit tour smacks of.

Nick's name and legend found me long before any of his music. I still came into earshot far too late in life. The first song I had was on a DJ-only sampler from Island. I refused to listen to it, as I was pissed that he'd killed himself and didn't want to taint my judgment by a lone song. It wasn't until I watched 'Ratcatcher' which features 'Cello Song', until I heard him.

I had no clue what he sounded like, but I somehow knew that had to be the legendary Nick Drake. That happened to me before, too. I''d never heard Jim Carroll before, but instinctively knew it was him when he came on the radio in Los Angeles. Speaking of LA (the culture-filled state, not the cesspool city), I was at a party in college where the host had somehow heard of my record collection, eclectic tastes, and knowledge, so he put me to a challenge: He'd play DJ, and I was to name as much as I could about the song. Like "Baba O'Reilly", released in the US in 1971 as an extract from the proposed Lifehouse project, Townshend's followup to Tommy. I knew the title was a joking ref to Trouser's Meher beliefs, where it was recorded, that Glyn Johns produced it, but Keith Moon produced the violin parts. That type of answer is what he wanted. When he put on some really wild Nawlins piano-driven jam, I knew it had to be Professor Longhair... even though I'd not yet ever heard him play, much less found any of his music.

Anyway, I knew that was Nick Drake. But it wasn't until I took a date to see 'Serendipity' that I heard another Drake song- Northern Sky, which happens to be the cut from the aforementioned sampler disc. At that point, I decided to again actively search for Nick's music. Trust me, where I lived throughout the 80s and 90s, Nick Drake was on the radar of maybe .3% of the public, his music never stocked in stores. So I downloaded a couple albums. I was quickly addicted, but it still took a while to find his home tapes. Tanworth-In-Arden (1 & 2), The Complete Home Recordings, Second Grace, etc.

Like many, I found the intrusion of string arrangements and the ensuing overproduction off-putting, often obscuring the wonderful material beneath. My fave is Pink Moon, it's such a wonderful song cycle.

I understand John Martyn had tapes of some of their jams and collaborations. He was Nick's mentor, and Nick would often show up to play together but end up staying for a couple weeks. As with Paul Kossoff, Martyn had difficulties watching such incredibly gifted musicians implode and, again as with Koss, John intentionally held Nick at arms length towards the end due to his erratic behavior.

From what I've gleaned from Martyn's own words, and more recently those of his widow, plus the many liner notes and interviews provided by Joe Boyd and other contemporaries, it seems more that Nick was too troubled and disoriented to conceive of intentionally ending his own life. Hell, I can state from my own experiences, I can forget to take my own heart and NSAID meds for days on end, just as I can forget which pills I'd taken minutes before. Hell, when I recently had pneumonia, I forgot to take my Amoxicillin for three or four days straight! His sis, Gabrielle, seems to have the best- and most honest- account of his death: She's unsure, but very strongly feels Nick was so depressed, confused, that his head wasn't capable of keeping his doses straight. I concur, and wish I'd listened to Northern Sky when I got that sampler decades back. Not that it would have helped because, as I mentioned, his albums were extremely difficult to find.

It's somewhat disappointing that a Volkswagen advert finally brought him some popularity and acclaim on this side of the pond, but I think Nick was way ahead of his time. Not forty years, as he's always been a musician's musician, but Americans are pretty damned thick when it comes to politics and culture. Case in point: Scott or the Walker Bros are still unknown here.

Whether intentional or a tragic oversight, Nick's death robbed culture of one of the most gifted musicians of a generation. Again as with label-mate Koss, he didn't even make it to the 27 club, both having died at 26. Of course, most of those in the 27 club weren't close to his talent. Jimi clearly was, but not Jim Morrison, Janis, Brian Jones, Pigpen, etc.

Great entry to the thread, ChrisAAA. And another nod to Island Records- Nick, Koss/Free, John Martyn, Richard Thompson/Fairport, all labelmates.
