Timeline 39

39. The phone was off the hook. All the drapes were pulled close. There were no lights on in the house except for the light in the bedroom. The door to the children's bedroom could not be closed due to clothing lying in the doorway. The blinds in the children's bedroom are hanging out the window and the window is open.

Seems to me the blind in the childrens window were hanging outside because thats the exit route the children used.

As for the light on in the bedroom....which bedroom was it......Tinas or the boys room?

I was wondering if it was in Tina's bedroom.

Its interesting that no other lights were on. Either the murders were done in the dark (which makes you wonder how Justin could have seen anything) or the perps turned off the lights on the way out the door.

or Justin turned off the lights when he finished covering Sue up, putting the cushion under Dana's head and setting the hammer and butcher knife side by side on the kitchen table then headed off to bed (just a guess on my part).

I was thinking the perps turned the lights off when they left, maybe thinking people would be suspicious of lights burning all night.

There was probably the light from the tv on in the boys room......no one has clarified which bedroom light was on. As for the living room lights it seems to me that had Sue let someone in she would have turned a light on.

Everyone has said the cabin was dark but it couldn't have been. Too much activity going on for it to be completely dark. The boys coming home......if it was dark in the cabin and they heard people in the living room they would have turned on a light. Dana being hit while he was trying to escape (could the perp hit him while he was running - in the dark?) Justin possibly seeing what was going on? Could he see that well in the dark? Someone turned off some lights before the night ended.

Shelia what time did your mother normally go to bed? Did she keep the tv on? Did she ever sleep on the couch?

She sometimes slept on the couch. Due to we had two beds in the bedroom. I think she has slept with the TV on at times. I know she was not a night owl either. And if i remember, there were no other TV's in the house.

So the boys were watching tv in the living room then? I always assumed they were watching it in the bedroom. That makes it all the more interesting if the tv wasn't on when you came home in the morning. Makes me think your mom was asleep when the perps knocked or walked in.

Thank you for answering questions. I hate to be intrustive and I do appreciate when you respond.

Sheila, would your mother have locked the front door knowing that john and dana where not home or did he have a key to get in? The reason i ask is if john did have a key and the front door was locked and your mother fell asleep on the couch the perps would of had to knock to wake your mother up to answer the door. If john didnt have a key and the front door was unlocked and your mother was asleep on the couch maybe the perps tried the front door and opened the door and went inside and startled sue?

I don't know if she had it locked or not. I was spending the night next door. I think it was unlocked when I went home the next morning, but again, that morning was a blurr.

looking at prints then would have been a pain staking process. ive read before that it can take several hours doing it the way they did in 81 just on one print. imagine having to do several. it appears these cops were a bit lazy. so i doubt they even put in that much effort.

Josh or Sheila.....do either of you know if the prints have been run thru any data bases? CoffeeIsLoves statement reminded me once again that this was 1981 and processing finger prints was definetly a tedious process back then. Is there any way to find out if they have (or can be) run thru AFIS?

actually fingerprints arent "run thru a database" like you hear on tv... its not a computer that sorts thru millions at once to find a match its a trained professional HUMAN. The computer can point you in the right direction but it wont provide a match. The person checking still has hundreds or even thousands to go thru before they can say yes or no to a match. Local cops btw are NOT trained to do this.

all they have to do is submit the prints to the fbi who maintains IAFIS. they log the print and any criminal history into the system. thats about the extent of the human work that i found. if they took the print from the cabin and uploaded into the system the program would run the print against what it has stored and possibly offering up a "hit". i doubt pcso has done anything with this since they arent capable of having control over it.

From what I have been told, there are still many unidentified fingerprints from the cabin that n one has checked.
